1. Treat Every Firearm as if it Were Loaded
This is the golden rule of the shooting world. Never, under any circumstances, assume a firearm is empty. Even if you have just cleared the chamber yourself, the moment you set the weapon down and pick it up again, you must treat it with the respect due to a loaded gun.
Statistics show that most accidents occur with “unloaded” guns. At Střelnice Sklep, we instill a culture where every shooter performs a proper safety check before and after their session. We require firearms to be stored in a safe condition—usually with the slide locked back or a chamber flag inserted. Nevertheless, your mindset should always be: “This gun is ready to fire.” This level of constant awareness is what separates a professional from an amateur.
2. Never Point the Muzzle at Anything You Do Not Intend to Destroy
Imagine a permanent laser beam emitting from the barrel of your firearm. Anything that beam touches is in the line of fire. This concept, known as “muzzle discipline,” dictates that your firearm must always be pointed in a safe direction.
At our facility, the safe direction is always downrange toward the bullet trap. Never rotate the weapon sideways, even when clearing a malfunction or adjusting your grip. If you need to speak with your instructor, leave the firearm on the bench pointing downrange and turn only your body. Maintaining strict muzzle discipline is the ultimate sign of respect for your fellow shooters and the range staff.
3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Your Sights Are on Target
Humans have a natural “startle response”—a physical tendency to clench their hands when surprised or losing balance. If your finger is on the trigger before you are ready to fire, any sudden movement or noise could result in a negligent discharge. Therefore, your trigger finger must remain straight and rested along the frame of the weapon, well outside the trigger guard.
The finger only moves to the trigger when the sights are aligned on the target and you have made the conscious decision to shoot. As soon as the shot is fired and you are not immediately engaging again, the finger returns to its “home” position on the frame. This simple habit is the most effective way to prevent accidental shots.
4. Be Sure of Your Target and What is Beyond It
In the controlled environment of an indoor range like Střelnice Sklep, this rule might seem straightforward. You have a clear lane and a designated target. However, the responsibility goes deeper. You must be aware of the surroundings, the target stands, and the specific area you are aiming at.
Bullets can pass through targets or fragment upon hitting hard surfaces. Always ensure you are shooting only at your assigned target and not hitting the range equipment, such as lighting or target carriers. Responsibility for the projectile doesn’t end when it leaves the barrel; it stays with the shooter until the bullet comes to a complete stop in the backstop.
5. Follow All Instructions from the Range Officer (RO)
The Range Officer is the ultimate authority on the range. Their word is final. At Střelnice Sklep, our instructors are highly trained professionals dedicated to your safety and the quality of your experience.
If an instructor shouts “CEASE FIRE” or “STOP,” you must immediately stop shooting, remove your finger from the trigger, and place the firearm on the bench with the muzzle pointing downrange.
